Stop 1.5 BlueHDi Engine Failure: 7mm vs 8mm Chain Guide

1.5 BlueHDi Chronic Camshaft Chain Issue: Symptoms, Solutions, and Cost Guide

1. What is the 1.5 BlueHDi 7mm Chain Problem?

In the 1.5 BlueHDi engines widely used by the PSA (Stellantis) group, there is a small timing chain located at the top of the engine that connects the two camshafts, completely independent of the main timing belt. In engines manufactured until early 2023, this chain was designed to be 7mm thick (21 teeth). Over time, this thin 7mm chain stretches, wears out, and ultimately snaps, causing severe engine damage. This is the most well-known chronic mechanical failure of these modern 1.5 diesel engines.

2. How to Detect 1.5 BlueHDi Timing Chain Noise and Failure?

The most obvious symptom of this problem is sound. If the chain in your vehicle has started to stretch or wear, you will experience the following symptoms:

  • A distinct metallic rattling or continuous scraping sound coming from the top cover, especially during the first start in the morning when the engine is cold.
  • A rhythmic ticking or cricket-like noise coming from under the bonnet while idling.
  • If you continue to drive the vehicle despite this noise and the chain snaps, the pistons will hit the valves, the engine will stall instantly, and the vehicle will not start again. This situation requires a complete engine rebuild with a significant budget.

3. Why Does the Camshaft Chain Break or Stretch?

The main reasons behind this issue are:

  • Thin Design (7mm): The 7mm chain structure in the system is simply too weak to withstand the high operating pressure and stress of modern diesel engines over the long term.
  • Oil and Soot Problems: Micro-soot leaking from emission systems like the DPF and EGR mixes with the engine oil and gets between the thin chain links. This soot acts like sandpaper, thinning the chain. For this reason, the manufacturer has made it mandatory to use a thicker and more protective 5W-30 (FPW9.55535/03) engine oil instead of thinner oils to increase protection.

4. Brands and Models Using the 1.5 BlueHDi (and 1.5 EcoBlue) Engine

This engine is not only used in Peugeot models but across a huge portion of the market. If your vehicle is one of the following models and was manufactured before January 2023, it carries the 7mm chain risk:

  • Peugeot: 208, 2008, 301, 308, 3008, 508, 5008, Rifter, Partner, Expert
  • Citroën: C3, C3 Aircross, C4, C4 Cactus, C5 Aircross, C-Elysée, Berlingo, Jumpy
  • Vauxhall / Opel: Corsa, Astra, Crossland, Mokka, Grandland, Combo, Vivaro
  • DS Automobiles: DS 3 Crossback, DS 4, DS 7 Crossback
  • Ford: Focus, Transit Connect, Tourneo Connect (Ford uses this engine under the name 1.5 EcoBlue)
  • Toyota: Proace, Proace City
  • Fiat: Doblo, Scudo

5. How to Tell if Your Chain is 7mm or 8mm?

In early 2023, the Stellantis group corrected this flaw by updating all vehicles on the production line with a much stronger 8mm (22 teeth) chain system.

7mm and 8mm

7mm and 8mm

When you open your vehicle's bonnet, you can determine the system's status by looking at the engine top cover (camshaft housing). While the cover for the 7mm system has a flat (smooth) semi-circle shape (code: 9812647280), the updated safe 8mm cover has a ridged structure (code: 9830580480).

You can examine the main differences between the old and new systems in the table below:

The Most Important Detail to Note: Transitioning from the 7mm system to the 8mm system is not a simple part replacement. Because the new 8mm chain's diameter and thickness have increased, the chain and the new 22-tooth camshafts do not physically fit into the old engine's narrow cover (code 9812647280). Therefore, during the revision process, it is a technical necessity to replace the camshafts, chain, tensioner, and camshaft carrier completely as a compatible "8mm Set".

6. Stellantis 10-Year / 150,000-Mile Warranty Extension and Conditions

Stellantis has officially acknowledged this chronic mechanical issue and extended the warranty coverage for 1.5 BlueHDi engines up to 10 years or 150,000 miles (approx. 240,000 km) across Europe and the UK.

Conditions to benefit from the warranty: Your vehicle's periodic maintenance must have been carried out on time, without exceeding the mileage limit (with a maximum tolerance of 3 months or 1,900 miles), and strictly using the manufacturer-approved engine oil at professional garages. Stellantis also offers retroactive reimbursement via an online compensation platform for customers who paid for this repair between January 2023 and June 2025, provided they meet these strict service criteria.

If your vehicle is out of warranty due to previous owners skipping maintenance or using unauthorised procedures, and the engine is heavily damaged due to a snapped chain, the repair bill at authorised dealerships can be exceptionally high, often exceeding the economic value of older vehicles. Therefore, it is life-saving to intervene before the chain snaps when you hear the "rattling" sound.

7. 2026 Independent Garage 8mm Upgrade & Repair Costs (Europe & UK)

For vehicles that are out of warranty or do not meet the strict service history conditions, having this procedure done at professional independent garages is financially the most logical route. Transitioning to the 8mm revision kit preventatively, before the chain breaks, will save you from massive future expenses.

Here is the updated 2026 repair cost guide based on European and UK independent specialist averages:

  • 8mm Upgrade Kit (Parts Only): The price of the complete OEM 8mm kit (camshafts, chain, tensioner, and carrier) ranges between £600 and £800 (approx. €700 - €950) depending on the supplier. Authorised dealers charge significantly more just for the parts.
  • Preventative 8mm Upgrade (Parts + Labour): Upgrading your system before the chain snaps will cost between £1,200 and £1,800 (approx. €1,400 - €2,100) at an independent specialist. This generally includes the 8mm kit, fresh oil, a new timing belt, and water pump. Authorised dealerships will charge considerably more for this preventative job.
  • Catastrophic Engine Rebuild (After Chain Snaps): If the chain snaps and damages the valves and pistons, the cost of a full engine rebuild or replacement at an independent garage spirals to between £3,000 and £5,000+ (approx. €3,500 - €6,000+). At a main dealer, this figure can easily double.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stellantis recently updated the oil requirements to address premature timing chain wear. You must no longer use 0W-20 or 0W-30 oils. The mandated engine oil is now 5W-30 viscosity meeting the FPW9.55535/03 specification (e.g., Mobil 1 ESP Formula P 5W-30).
In the UK and Europe, having a preventative 8mm upgrade kit fitted at an independent specialist (before the chain snaps) typically costs between £1,200 and £1,800 (including parts and labour). If you wait until the chain snaps, repairing the catastrophic engine damage can cost between £3,000 and £5,000+.
Yes. The 1.5 EcoBlue engine found in the Ford Focus and Transit Connect was co-developed with PSA and shares the exact same DV5 architecture. Therefore, pre-2023 Ford 1.5 EcoBlue engines suffer from the identical 7mm camshaft chain wear and snapping problem.
Stellantis has extended the special coverage for the camshaft chain issue to 10 years or 150,000 miles for vehicles produced between October 2017 and January 2023. However, they will only cover the costs (100% parts and labour) if you can prove your vehicle has a flawless service history, strictly using approved oils and adhering to service intervals with a maximum tolerance of 3 months or 1,900 miles.
You can identify the setup without removing the engine covers by looking at the camshaft carrier housing on top of the engine. The 7mm version has a flat semi-circle curve (OE Code: 9812647280), while the upgraded 8mm version has a semi-circle curve with a distinct ridge on top (OE Code: 9830580480).
